You never know when it's going to hit you....

This weekend, for the first time since I turned 21, I felt significantly older. Perhaps you are wondering why....? Well let me explain. You see, I graduated from HS in 2003. Yep. That does NOT make me feel old. HOWEVER, I have not taken a math class since 2002. You are now thinking "why would math make QueenBee feel older?" Because this past weekend folks I took my first math class in almost a decade. And it's not an algebra class or geometry. Nope. It is basic mathematic skills. This entails learning about adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers. Sounds simple enough, yes? Well apparently my brain no longer knows how to even read and translate a word problem. I was doing homework today that should have taken me less than 30 minutes and I spent 90 staring at the computer. WorkerBee came home from his morning class to me sitting at the computer saying the word problem out loud. He asked if I needed help. So I showed him what I was up against. Wrong idea. Because both of us had no idea what on earth this question actually meant. I take it upon myself to be humble and "view the tutorial" about this particular question and you know what happened...? I got mad. Because when the test told me to "simplify the problem" I took that to mean to re-write the problem in a more simplified way. But the test meant it wanted me to SOLVE this problem. Not simplify. SOLVE. To me, there is a big difference between the meaning of those words. Maybe it's just me being out of school for so long but my brain is no longer conditioned the way it once was. I did GREAT on my other assignments but I have a feeling that math and I are not going to get along well after the start we got off to. Oh and all my classes are online so I have to stare at the computer all day which may or may not have affected my performance. Basically....

Dear Math,

Even after an 8 year break I still hate you. You better start being nice to me soon or I will burn my book.

Love, me!

p.s. school is hard. Oh. And in addition to belly/army crawling BabyBee has also realized he can pull his chubby little self to a standing position. It is too cute. Pics will be coming next post. I promise

  2. Hey Old-Timer! If you need help with math, the Hubby was certified to teach at one point. He might be able to help you. I also still remember quite a few things math-related, so call me if you need help. :)

I think it's funny that you are feeling old. 'Cause you're not. At all.

  3. Yay for the Beeboy! I can't wait for pics. And don't get discouraged about the math. It'll probably take awhile to get into the swing of things. My first 2 weeks back at German were a nightmare, but things are coming along now. Besides remember when we were in 4th grade together and I had just transferred from dumb Lindbergh to smart people school Franklin? You rocked at math and I sucked. So basically, if I can survive math then you definitely can. Go you!
